You are invited to a special event honoring Geeta Iyengar. Geetaji passed away on December 16th at the age of 74 in Pune. In the Indian tradition, a ceremony is held on the 13th day after someone has passed. In this manner, we will gather to celebrate our Geetaji’s life and contributions.
Geeta was the daughter of BKS Iyengar and started teaching yoga at age 16. She functioned as the main teacher in our Iyengar community for decades, and especially since her father’s passing. She wrote and taught extensively, traveling throughout the world while running the women’s classes, therapy classes, teacher education and much more at RIMYI in Pune. Though she suffered from multiple serious health conditions, Geeta worked a full schedule – generously teaching, lecturing and directly guiding her students – until her very last day of life.
For many local students and teachers here in the Bay Area, Geeta was our most direct inspiration. As a writer and teacher, a yogi and Ayurvedic doctor, Geeta’s influence can be seen world wide. Whether or not you ever met Geeta, she has made a direct impact on your life.
It is impossible to adequately convey what an influential and bright presence Geeta was in our lives. She was truly “a gem for women” and men all over the world. She leaves behind a powerful legacy of commitment to the practice of Iyengar yoga. Her one-of-a-kind dedication to yoga was singular in focus – dedicating herself the students, the practice and the teaching over her 74 years of life. She held our world-wide Iyengar community together like a lioness.
This event will include chant, stories from Geeta’s life and a videos of her teaching. Heather and others will speak on her personal experience being in Pune for Geeta’s last days. We invite anyone and everyone to come to learn more about Geeta – her life and impact on our lives.
