Yoga in Action is a workshop inspired by Deidra’s Black History and Yoga photo Series. The series shows Deidra in yoga poses alongside notable Black Americans and objects related to the theme of the series. This workshop brings the series to our practice.
Deidra started this series as a way to celebrate Black History Month by honoring Black leaders in history including Josephine Baker, Malcolm X, John Coltrane, Shirley Chisholm, Fred Hampton, etc. Every year the series has continued with a new focus. For example, she has showcased Black leaders of today, Black women in history and paid respect to Black men that were victims of police brutality, violence, and racism. The 2021 Black History & Yoga Series honored Black culture, everything from music to philosophy. It’s amazing to learning how Black culture has inspired and influenced so much of what we do.
In this workshop we will practice many of the poses from Deidra’s photo series, pulling inspiration from the alignment and awareness of each posture, and the various leaders in Black history that are represented alongside each pose.
After class we will look at photos from past and current photo series, discuss our take on the photos examine our experience having that be a part of our practice.
This weekend with Deidra will be a chance to learn and experience through all aspects of our embodiment – asana, pranayama and coming together in community.
