Shoulders and the Subtle Body with Michael Lucey

Shoulders and the Subtle Body
with Michael Lucey
Saturday July 11 from 2 – 4:30 pm.
Hybrid: at our Berkeley studio or via Zoom online
How does the physical work we do in our asana practice relate to other parts of our being?
We are always working with our shoulders in our asana practice, trying to make sure they are strong enough or open enough, trying to balance right and left, learning how they relate to our neck, our chest and our spine.
Perhaps by now we have also started to pay attention to the relationship between our shoulders and our breath. When we exhale, the shoulders can relax further. When we inhale, we can lift the chest and get better placement of the shoulder blades on the back the back of the body.
Could we go deeper still in our understanding? We know our shoulders end up stiff or tight or pushed up near our ears when we are tired, stressed or angry. So, our shoulders do have a relation to both our emotional and psychological being as well.
If we’ve studied the chakra system, we know that the shoulders are positioned between the anahata (heart) and vishuddha (throat) chakras. So, can knowledge of the chakras help us to understand how and why to work on our shoulders?
Join us for this special workshop connecting our physical practice with deeper explorations of who we are. This workshop will not be about therapeutics such as how to work with problems in our shoulders, but about understanding new things about our own shoulders. We will visit all categories of poses, with the goal of building new kinds of knowledge and sensitivity about our shoulders and how they are part of us.
This workshop is appropriate for students with at least two years consistent practice of Iyengar Yoga and experience practicing inversions.
The workshop will be held in person at Adeline Yoga Studio in Berkeley, CA. OR signup to stream the workshop live. All participants will receive the recording.
