Restorative Asana & Pranayama with Janet Macleod

March 5, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Adeline Yoga is honored to welcome our teacher of teachers!

The Petals of Yoga:

Restorative Asana & Pranayama with Janet Macleod

Saturday, March 5th : 2 – 4 pm PST on Zoom

A Benefit Workshop for Adeline Yoga’s Yoga Blessings Fund

Mr. Iyengar called the 8 limbs of yoga the 8 petals of yoga. He wanted to emphasize the connection between the different stages of the system and felt that this was an effective way to do it.

Asana and pranayama can nestle together like the petals of a flower.  Typically, asana is taught first to provide structure for the body.  And then, we learn how to work with the breath through pranayama. Pranayama is a subtle practice that help to transition the student towards the more meditative aspects of yoga.

Prana – life force – is carried on the breath.  When you learn to work with your breath in pranayama, you can increase your vitality on a cellular level.

In this workshop, Janet will focus on the relationship between asana and pranayama, teaching asanas that prepare the physical body for the practice of pranayama.  This will include a variety of supported asanas which will encourage relaxation of the muscles, organs, sense organs and the brain.   You will have an opportunity to open the chest in a soft way.

In this special workshop, both supine and seated pranayama will be taught.

Recommended: One year of consistent study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Janet MacLeod began studying yoga in London during the late 1970’s and continues to study with the Iyengar family both in the West and in India. She has been a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) since 1983.

She teaches ongoing classes at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco (IYISF) and is also an assessor for the National Certification Committee. This provides her with a deep understanding of Iyengar Yoga.

Born on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, Janet has travelled to many parts of the world offering workshops and retreats. She has also taught at the Yoga Journal conference in San Francisco.

Before devoting herself to teaching exclusively, Janet was the Program Director at IYISF. In 2001 she co-chaired the National Iyengar Yoga Conference in Pasadena where 850 students studied under Geeta S. Iyengar (BKS Iyengar’s daughter).

Her style of teaching is faithful to the ancient tradition of yoga, but is infused with love and light. Janet believes in sharing the joy that she has found in yoga with all who come in contact with her. This along with the technical skills she has accumulated over many years of personal practice, study and teaching make her a much sought after teacher wherever she goes.

ABOUT THE YOGA BLESSINGS FUND:

Adeline Yoga is committed to supporting diversity in our yoga community and social justice. The Yoga Blessings Fund is a scholarship program that encourages participation in Iyengar Yoga at Adeline Yoga. The Fund offers partial and full scholarships for nearly any class or workshop. It primarily focuses on deep studies programs such as Yoga for Life and teacher training opportunities including Sadhana Studies.

We established this fund in 2012 for several reasons:

  • to provide access and support to people who come from backgrounds that are not well represented in most yoga studios
  • to support current students if they lose a job or experience financial hardship
  • to support those who want a deeper yoga education, but cannot afford the entire cost of longer programs
  • to support newer students who cannot attend the community classes due to their schedule.

Scholarships in the Yoga Blessing Fund are not based solely on need. We are committed to broadening access to yoga by encouraging practitioners who come from backgrounds that are not well represented in most yoga studios, or who come from communities that might be less familiar with the benefits of a yoga practice. These scholarships are an invitation to participate. Students of color, those living with disabilities or who identify as LGBTQ are especially encouraged to inquire about this opportunity.

The Yoga Blessings Fund is one part of a comprehensive approach to accessibility and community engagement.  For example, we have 3 sliding-scale community classes every week, social justice programming including a teachers group and speaker series, and an active workstudy program.

Our Yoga Blessings fund is the scholarship arm of our social justice initiatives.

It is administered according to:

  • Financial need. Financial need is defined as the inability to pay the full tuition fee for the program, based on an individual’s total financial situation (This should include assets and cash flow).
  • Currently enrolled students of Adeline Yoga.
  • Under-represented populations at the studio/Iyengar yoga.

The Yoga Blessings program is funded in three ways:

  • Income from overall studio sales.
  • Current students donate classes and money.
  • Fundraising events such as this.
