The Incredible Chair with Deborah Saliby

June 1 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Saturday, June 1st  from 2 – 4:30 pm in person

A special in-person workshop with Deborah Saliby

It can help you experience stability, and give you opportunities to build your strength. The chair can make some postures more demanding because it encourages us to practice with true alignment. And, at the same time, it can make other postures more relaxing because you can rest on it.

You can use the chair to help you with your standing poses, back extensions, forward bends, twists and inversions.

The chair gives us access to all these poses when we are stiff, or injured sick. And, anytime we need some relaxation, the chair is there for us.

Traveling? The chair in the aiport or even the airplane will help you feel better. Practicing at work? The chair is there to to relieve pain and give you a little upliftment.

Did you know that the chair can do all this? It can! At any age, the chair is an amazing tool. Whether you are strong or stiff, flexible or not, the chair is there to support, educate and encourage you.

We hope you will join us for this dynamic and interesting workshop in-person at our studio in Berkeley.  You will be amazed at all the ways we can use this chair. Deborah is only in the Bay Area a few times a year, so please carve out the time to join us!

Who is this program for? Anyone who is curious about new ways to use the chair to practice Iyengar Yoga. This workshop is best suited for people who have done at least three months of Iyengar Yoga with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher.

This workshop is a special fundraiser for our yoga blessings fund, a fund that provides access to yoga.

Suggested donation:  $50

Donate at other amounts is ok! All proceeds from this workshop will go to the Yoga Blessings Scholarship Fund.  Donate for yourself or for others to attend.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Deborah Saliby (she/her)  is a Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher (C-IYT and C-IAYT) and has been teaching Iyengar yoga for almost 40 years. A graduate of the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco, she studies regularly with Senior teachers and attends Iyengar conventions. Her classes are balanced and integrated, leaving students with greater energy, emotional stability and a renewed sense of well-being. Deborah also teaches private sessions by appointment for those wanting specific therapeutic attention, for example back care, mobility issues, strength building, postural alignment, pain and stress relief, whatever the needs. She specializes in yoga for back care and yoga for pregnancy and postpartum and is a hypnotherapist and hypnoBirthing instructor.  Deborah is a retired special education teacher.  When not teaching yoga, she can be found on long walks with her dog and gatherings with family and friends.

ABOUT THE YOGA BLESSINGS FUND:

Adeline Yoga is committed to supporting diversity in our yoga community and social justice. The Yoga Blessings Fund is a scholarship program that encourages participation in Iyengar Yoga at Adeline Yoga. The Fund offers partial and full scholarships for nearly any class or workshop. It primarily focuses on deep studies programs such as Yoga for Life and teacher training opportunities including Sadhana Studies.

We established this fund in 2012 for several reasons:

  • to provide access and support to people who come from backgrounds that are not well represented in most yoga studios
  • to support current students if they lose a job or experience financial hardship
  • to support those who want a deeper yoga education, but cannot afford the entire cost of longer programs
  • to support newer students who cannot attend the community classes due to their schedule.

Scholarships in the Yoga Blessing Fund are not based solely on need. We are committed to broadening access to yoga by encouraging practitioners who come from backgrounds that are not well represented in most yoga studios, or who come from communities that might be less familiar with the benefits of a yoga practice. These scholarships are an invitation to participate. Students of color, those living with disabilities or who identify as LGBTQ are especially encouraged to inquire about this opportunity.

The Yoga Blessings Fund is one part of a comprehensive approach to accessibility and community engagement.  For example, we have 3 sliding-scale community classes every week, social justice programming including a teachers group and speaker series, and an active workstudy program.

Our Yoga Blessings fund is the scholarship arm of our social justice initiatives.

It is administered according to:

  • Financial need. Financial need is defined as the inability to pay the full tuition fee for the program, based on an individual’s total financial situation (This should include assets and cash flow).
  • Currently enrolled students of Adeline Yoga.
  • Under-represented populations at the studio/Iyengar yoga.

The Yoga Blessings program is funded in three ways:

  • Income from overall studio sales.
  • Current students donate classes and money.
  • Fundraising events such as this.
