In this workshop, you will learn yoga therapy techniques for the brain and nerves. This workshop is ideal for students who have stress-related tension whether it is related to anxiety or nervousness, headaches – even migraines – or eye strain from working on computers. A central way to access the brain is through the spinal column. So people with neck and shoulder pain related to spinal stiffness, arthritis or other conditions will also benefit greatly from this workshop. Each student will learn practice techniques that help with individual circumstances and overall brain and nervous system health.
The brain and nervous system are complex and mysterious parts of our bodies. Yoga can shed some light on the mysteries, helping to heal through movement, stability and relaxation.
You will learn:
* How to bring circulation into the spinal column and position it for optimal healing
* Poses that soften the abdomen and groins for better breathing and brain responses.
* Poses that alleviate inflammation, rest the brain and stabilize the nervous system.
* How to use a head wrap to calm the nervous system, relax eye muscles and to help headaches.
* Poses that help release cranial pressure.
* Poses that encourage a relaxation response to release stress within the body, mind and emotions.
This course is designed for those with at least 1 year of consistent Iyengar Yoga practice.
Teachers and teachers-in-training who want to learn to better help their students are most welcome.
This workshop is not for students who have nervous system conditions such as tumors, vision challenges, acute dizziness, stroke, seizures, brain infections, dementia, MS, Parkinson’s, Bell’s Palsy, Cerebral Palsy, etc. These conditions can be better addressed with private yoga sessions.

Kelly Sobanski is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher at the Intermediate Junior III level. Based in Indiana, she has studied directly with BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and Abhijata Shridar including six months of study at the Iyengar Institute in Pune, India. Kelly has deep knowledge of Iyengar Yoga therapeutics and pain management, gleaned from her own practice and eight years assisting in Lois Steinberg’s therapy classes at Iyengar Yoga Champaign-Urbana and her time at the Iyengar Institute in Pune. Kelly has worked with many students with intricate and in-depth physical challenges. Kelly inspires practitioners at all levels to cultivate wisdom, intuition and luminance through the endless learning that yoga unveils. She is also a dedicated volunteer including past President of the Board of Directors for the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Mid-West.
For twelve years, Kelly has been dedicated to healing headaches and nerve pain through Iyengar Yoga due to a car accident. This accident was literally a major blow to her brain because she had already suffered a brain injury as a child. Kelly spent time as a therapy student at RIMYI with BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar, & Stephanie Quirk. In Addition, Kelly was taught by Lois Steinberg how to open her chest, help the curve in her neck and bring flexibility into her spine. Once the headaches improved, Kelly became an assistant in Lois’s weekly therapy classes. With this first-hand experience, she understands how entangled headaches and nerve pain can be. She strives to help others not to give up and to find ways to bring healing to life. Kelly is a Level 3 CIYT and is certified to teach Iyengar Yoga (RIMYI style) Therapy classes.
Open to all levels.
