To keep ourselves feeling balanced we need yoga! It is quite different to experience physical balance and emotional balance, and yet they share many commonalities. How is it that the practices of yoga – especially asana, pranayama and study of yoga philosophy – can help you hone your experience of balance in your body, mind and spirit? Join us for this immersive weekend to dive into this fascinating topic. We will investigate, experience, discuss and learn together!
This special weekend is offered by our Yoga for Healthy Aging Faculty via zoom. Over the three days you will learn which types of poses help with physical balance and agility. We will also learn how posture, strength and flexibility can support your emotional balance. From an anatomy perspective, participants will learn about the vestibular system, proprioception and interoception, plus how the senses related to sight, touch, smell and hearing work together.
Agility is our body’s capacity to be fast and nimble; to change the direction and the positioning of our body while our body is actively in motion. It is influenced by balance, strength, coordination and skill level. The ability to be agile, to pivot gracefully, also has a mental and emotional component. We need to be strong and agile – as well as flexible – to keep our feet on the ground! This weekend of yoga practice can improve your physical agility and positively influence your ability to emotionally pivot.
Throughout the weekend, each instructor will weave yoga philosophy to help you deepen your connection to the Vedic understanding of balance. By the end of the weekend, you will have a tool-kit of poses and a base of knowledge that you can utilize to support your physical and emotional well-being.
You will have handouts to use after the weekend – and access to the recordings for 30 days.
Friday 4:30– 6:30 pm PDT: Presentation on the anatomy and physiology of balance and the aging process with Shari Ser; followed by a restorative yoga practice with Deborah Saliby, based on B.K.S. Iyengar’s sequence Asanas for Emotional Stability outlined in his book Light on Life.
Saturday 10 am – Noon PDT: Saturday morning’s active asana session with Deborah Saliby will emphasize standing poses, using blocks, a chair and wall space for support and safety. By focusing on the placement of the lower body, standing asanas give us confidence and help develop our sense of balance. Building strength in the feet and legs translates upward into the spine while reinforcing a more stable foundation, greater stamina and an even more refined sense of balance. The class sequence also includes asanas to alleviate stress and quiet the mind.
Saturday 2 – 4 pm PDT: This session will focus on using yoga asana practice to improve our physical agility. And, by developing concentration through pranayama, we will enhance our mental agility. Learn with Sarah Harvey how building core strength through yoga practice can improve your sense of balance, and help you feel more centered and more agile.
Sunday 11:30 am –1:30 pm PDT: Asana and pranayama with Shari Ser. We need more ways to slow down and to recover from our hectic lifestyles. Sometimes we are forced to slow down or stop when we experience an injury, be it minor or severe. This includes falling, which often happens because we are rushing and not taking care. In this 2- hour session we will hone our asana practice by focusing on strength training and building endurance – qualities that improve balance and help avoid falls. The class ends with a pranayama practice that teaches us concentration, which leads to a sense of well-being and equanimity
This course is geared toward those who have at least 6 months of consistent study with an Iyengar Yoga teacher. It is also appropriate for teachers and teachers-in-training.
If you have minor health issues and injuries that is fine. You must be comfortable getting up and down from the floor with minimal assistance.

“The Yoga for Digestive Health Weekend Immersion was an outstanding workshop! I’m in awe of how the teachers can make all these poses accessible to people like me and to more advanced students…at the same time! Their knowledge, too, about yoga and digestion is incredible. I learned a lot.” – K.S.
