Joy Practice

3-4:30 pm

TODAY! March 21

Mudita is the Sanskrit word that means joy and is defined as the pleasure that comes from delighting in other’s well-being. Joy is one of the four immeasurable in Buddhism and is included in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as one of the qualities of mind which leads to citta prasadanam, “a graceful diffusion of consciousness”. Joy is our birthright as humans. It is not something that we really need to practice or create; in fact, it is our natural state or drastuh svarupe (YS.1.3).

That is easy to say and do when things are going well, but what about when we are going through difficult times? If we can continue to remember our true nature, and to experience joy and pleasure through adversity, then we gain resilience and confidence that any situation in life is workable. It is also a great way to feel empowered and expansive when everything else feels likes its contracting.

Join Cynthia for an exploration of joy through embodied movement, meditation and connection.

About the Instructor:

Cynthia Bates is a seasoned yoga and meditation teacher who has committed her life to uncovering the dharma or truth, knowing full well that truth is a moving target. For Cynthia, the root of spiritual practice lies in penetrating the veils of unknowing and becoming more and more comfortable with that state. The unknowing, intuitive or mystical state in which one experience the inter-connectivity and interdependence of life itself, is at the core of all spiritual practices. From that state, everything becomes workable and every experience becomes another opportunity to hone the wheel of dharma. She is known for her infectious laugh, intuition, and dark humor.

Cynthia began her yoga practice in the Mysore tradition and spent 18 years studying in the Iyengar lineage which included several trips to India to study directly with the Iyengar family. The bulk of her training as a yoga teacher comes from eight years of mentoring with Manouso Manos. She is also a dedicated student of Vajrayana Buddhism studying with Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Choknyi Nyima Rinpoche. In 2019 Cynthia move to Big Island of Hawaii where she has found a nourishing home. She continues to dedicate her life to spiritual practice with the understanding that there is no real separation between spiritual practice and life.
