Transforming the Adeline Corridor

Did you know that our neighborhood is about to go through some major changes?  The City of Berkeley is interested in revitalizing the Adeline Corridor, also known as the Lorin District.   The City was recently awarded a $750K planning grant to look at the future of our neighborhood – residential, business, arts, transportation, environment, etc.

Here is some information about the planning process so far, and resources so you can get involved:

Over 120 people gathered the first community forum on the Adeline Corridor Plan on January 31st at the South Berkeley Senior Center.   The meeting started with Mayor Tom Bates and Council member Max Anderson welcoming participants.  Then, the staff from the City of Berkeley gave very interesting presentations about the past and present of the neighborhood – its demographics, business climate, etc.  The meeting ended with dynamic and emotional feedback from residents about the form and content of the plan and the planning process.

According to the city, “The focus of this preliminary meeting was to provide an overview of the 24-30-month planning process, introduce key project staff (from the City and MIG, the lead consultant selected to prepare the plan), and generate ideas how to tailor the community outreach and involvement efforts to ensure that we reach out in a time, place and manner that makes it convenient and easy for people to participate.”

Here are two interesting articles about the meeting itself:

There are several important resources you will want to look at in order to get more information on this important project, and participate further:

Community Outreach Survey: Download the outreach survey to give feedback on how the project can outreach to you. Share it with your friends and neighbors!
The Adeline Corridor Advisory Group (ACAG) will be a group of five individuals representing the areas of 1) visual and performing arts, 2) architecture and urban design, 3) faith community, 4) residents, and 5) businesses who will assist the staff and consultants working to prepare the Adeline Corridor Plan.  Throughout the 24- to 30-month planning process, the role of this group is to promote the planning process and share information with friends, neighbors and colleagues about how to get involved.  The group will also be asked to comment on draft documents and/or interim work products.  It is important to note that this group is only one aspect of a comprehensive community engagement process which is being developed based on input received from community members who live, work, or play in the Adeline Corridor study area.

If you are interested in being participating in this group, please complete “Expression of Interest”Form and return it no later than Friday, February 20th.

I (Heather) have applied to be a part of this group, on behalf of Adeline Yoga and the newly formed Lorin Merchants Association.
