Anusthana: Explore Iyengar Yoga Through the 8-Fold Path

September 13

Anusthana: The Dedicated Practices of Iyengar Yoga

September 2025 – April 2026

Through the dedicated practices of yoga, we can experience our own wisdom radiating in its beauty.

Think about your experience emerging from a good asana practice:  you feel clear, refreshed and radiant.  That is jnana diptihi – the experience of your wisdom radiating in its glory.  These effects of our Iyengar Yoga practices are profound – they help us to become more settled, wise and radiant.

Let us explore this together!

You are invited to join us for Anusthana, an 8-month program exploring the 8-limbs of yoga.

Our tools in this exploration will be the wide range practices available to dedicated practitioners of Iyengar Yoga:  asana, pranayama, chanting, meditation, Ayurveda and the study of yoga philosophy in sangha.

Anusthana is a continuation of our cherished Sadhana Studies program, offering an opportunity for those who wish to carry their study and sadhana even further. It will build on the foundation of what was established in Sadhana Studies, inviting further explorations for your personal practice, reflection, and integration.

Heather Haxo Phillips will be your program leader, with Michael Lucey, Kelly Sobanski and Sandy Lamerson providing additional teachings.

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 2.28 and other sutras from the Sadhana Pada that will be the foundation around which our studies evolve.  Through the 8-months we will study in-depth the “astau angangi” or 8-limbs of yoga including yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara and the inner limbs of meditation, concentration and samadhi.

From an asana perspective, Guruji’s Intro II and Jr Intermediate 1 syllabus will be our guide.  Serious practitioners, those studying to become teachers and existing CIYT will have an opportunity to dive deep into the progressive nature of asana so that we may fully explore what “angani” or constituent parts really means.  The Sadhana Studies’ Year 2 syllabus will provide home practice sequences as your base. From there, you will also learn more about how to personalize your home practice for your specific needs. Over our time together, you will be amazed to learn more about how the asanas relate to each other, and how they relate to us as human beings.

This program will continue your studies of holistic health through Ayurveda, with additional focus on deep rest, including the variety of healing savasanas, reclining pranayama and building up to sitting pranayama.

With Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras as our main source of study, we will be supported by reflections from the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. These texts – and their commentaries – will develop our experience of the 8-fold path and help us delve deeper into the key foundational concepts of yoga philosophy including:

  • The definitions of Yoga
  • Yoga Ethics
  • The Kleshas
  • The Gunas
  • Karma Theory

Who you learn with makes a huge impact on what you learn.  So, small group peer discussions will be an integral part of your studies between our in-person sessions.  Discussion prompts and journaling exercises will be provided each month to guide your studies and self-reflection.

THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE FROM SADHANA STUDIES

“I loved the emphasis on home practice and the guidance offered on how to establish a home practice, from altar making to scheduling. I also appreciated how much Heather empowered us to engage in practice, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day. That teaching was invaluable for me.

~Devon
