In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the chapter on yogic practice opens with discussion about the acts of yoga. They include: zeal in practice, study of the self and surrender.
In the commentary on this Sutra 2.1, BKS Iyengar states that for Patanjali, the practice of yoga is the “yoga of action” called kriya yoga. Kriya yoga is a path both for the beginner and more experienced practitioner to learn how to stabilize the mind. BKS Iyengar explains that kriya yoga is composed of self-discipline, self study and surrender to God. These three types of practice of kriya yoga helps us explore the path of action, the path of knowledge, and the path of devotion.
Sutra 2.1 gives an important perspective on why we get on the mat, and how to live our yoga out in the world. It is a sutra that every yoga practitioner should know about!
Let us get together to explore this beautiful and important sutra. We will discuss how these practices of yoga play out in daily life, and what the three paths have to do with each other.
This is a free discussion. No experience with yoga philosophy is needed.
Got a question for the teachers? Just want to hang out? Our monthly community chit-chats are a time to get together less formally.
The yoga tradition offers us so much wisdom. Even within Iyengar Yoga there is a universe of interesting topics to discuss. Over a brief-one hour session we will take a deeper dive into one specific topic that we love.
Our monthly community chit-chats are a time to get together less formally. For many years, we would gather at the Iyengar Institute in Pune to chit-chat with Geeta Iyengar, Sunita Iyengar and now Abhijata and other RIMYI teachers. We treasure these times together and look forward to bringing this tradition to Adeline Yoga. Its a fun time to engage in stimulating conversation around important topics that relate to Vedic tradition and Iyengar Yoga practice specifically.
The purpose of our monthly gathers are to:
Throughout 2023, we will host a monthly chit-chat on the last Monday of the month, 7:30 pm pst on zoom. The format will vary between a presentation, Q&A and group discussion. Breakout groups and other creative uses of zoom may happen!
