SUMMARY:Yoga at Every Stage of Life with Michael Lucey
DESCRIPTION:One of the most powerful things about the practice of Iyengar yoga is that it meets you exactly where you are. It helps us to evolve and transform day to day and over time. The practice we do in our earlier years will and should change as we age. And\, from day to day\, the practice helps us to work with illness\, injuries\, and difficult life events. How do we construct a yoga practice that serves us from day to day and throughout our life? \nIn this weekend we will explore all of these questions in a very practical way: we will start with a basic\, well-rounded sequence as it might be practiced by a healthy adult with a reasonable degree of experience in the practice. Then\, over the course of the weekend\, we will experience how that sequence might be adjusted for people who are younger\, for people who are older\, for people who are stiffer or newer to yoga\, and for people who might be in a situation requiring some kind of physical or mental support from their practice. \nWhat are the principles that apply in each of these different situations\, and what principles apply across all of the situations? During the weekend\, students will be asked to study a certain number of sequences to try to ascertain the principles behind them. \n\n\nFriday\, June 16 – Sunday\, June 18\nFriday  6:00–8:00 pm\nSaturday 1:00–6:00 pm\nSunday 12:45–2:45 pm\n\n  \nTuition\n$245 per person \n

SUMMARY:Walking on Fire: A Yoga Series for Women
DESCRIPTION:Walking on Fire\nJune 1\, 8\, 15 and 22\n4-5:30pm (Women’s Essentials) \nThere are stages of our life or times in our life when it seems like the world is on fire. Some of these transitions are hormonal (adolescence\, peri-menopause) and others are created through external circumstances that ask us to go beyond our perceived limits.  When our internal fire blazes too strongly it can burn us out and leave us anxious\, angry\, exhausted and overwhelmed. The secret is to cultivate a water crucible for these fiery transformations to take place in. How can we cultivate this flame of vitality without letting it burn us? \nJoin Cynthia for a month of cultivating the balance of water and fire in the body through yoga asana. Open to all women of all stages of life: Adolescence\, Pregnancy\, Motherhood\, Peri-Menopause\, Menopause. \n1) How do we create space for difficult emotions to arise and be? \n2) What antidotes can we apply when we feel out of control? \n3) Can we learn to listen to our watery/reflective/intuitive inner voice while the fire blazes around us? \n  \nTuition: \n$45 for the 4 week series\nOr drop-in using your existing class pass \n  \n\n \nAbout the Instructor:\n Cynthia Bates is a seasoned Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) at the Intermediate Junior II level. Her goal as a teacher of yoga is singular\, to inspire transformational experiences that lead to positive life change. For Cynthia\, injury\, illness and trauma can all be used as a skillful means for spiritual practice. She is a devoted student of Manouso Manos\, Victoria Austin\, B.K.S. Iyengar and the Iyengar family with whom she had the honor of studying with in India in 2010\, 2012 and 2014. SUMMARY:Yoga for Women's Health with Cynthia Bates
DESCRIPTION:“Yoga frees one from life’s sorrows and from the diseases and fluctuations of the mind. It gives serenity and composure\, an inward unity amidst the diverse struggles of life. It is the art of knowing oneself and knowing the eternal truth.” \n– Geeta Iyengar\, Yoga: A Gem for Women \nA woman’s life goes through three distinct transformations in not just her body but her identity and self. Iyengar’s daughter\, Geeta Iyengar\, we have a blueprint for how to use yoga as a practice to live our lives more deeply\, more fully as a woman. Join Cynthia for an experiential practice of yoga through the stages of a woman’s life. \nThis stand-alone workshop is part of the Sadhana Studies program. It is appropriate for the eager student\, aspiring yoga teachers and current yoga professionals. \n  \nTuition: \n$110 per person \n  \n \n\nAbout the Instructor:\n \nCynthia Bates is a seasoned Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) at the Intermediate Junior II level. SUMMARY:Community Movie Night: Who Invented Modern Yoga Props?
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Adeline to hear a very special talk by B.K.S. Iyengar’s granddaughter Abhijata Sridhar Iyengar on the invention and use of props in Iyengar yoga.  The talk was just given in December 2015 at the Yoganushasanam Convention in Pune\, India. You will get to see many of the inventionsB.K.S. Iyengar developed over his lifetime.  While B.K.S. Iyengar is widely know as the “inventor” of yoga props he never profited personally from his creations. Instead\, he offered the props\, like his teachings\, as a gift to the world; as a means to sustain us all in our practice and life. \nLearn more about yoga props\, about the creativity of B.K.S. Iyengar and share some tea and snacks with your yoga community at Adeline! \nThis event is free and open to the public.

She was the 2009 recipient of a Fulbright Senior Scholar Award to Aotearoa New Zealand\, and is writing a new book about ways that contemporary Indigenous choreographers in the U.S.\, Canada\, and Aotearoa are inhabiting Indigenous epistemologies and thereby reframing colonizing institutions in their dancing and dance making. Professor Shea Murphy coordinates annual “Indigenous Choreographers at Riverside” events that have been bringing Indigenous dance artists\, and discussion around contemporary Indigenous dance\, to the UCR campus regularly since 2004. \n  \nSara M Acevedo is a neurodivergent\, mestiza\, activist scholar\, educator and disability justice advocate born and raised in Colombia\, South America — and a student at Adeline Yoga. \nSara is Diversity and Disability Advocacy Fellow for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. Sara also serves as Adjunct Faculty in the School of Undergraduate Studies and is a doctoral candidate in the Anthropology and Social Change Program. \nHer current research explores activism as history making to better understand and to disrupt the rhythms of capitalist modernity as they impinge on our right to produce spaces of inherent value by and for disabled people. More specifically\, Sara focuses on the politics of self-direction and self-governance across neurodivergent grassroots communities servicing neurodivergent transitioning youth in the Bay Area. \nSara utilizes activist ethnographic methods to amplify the voices and lived experiences of groups marked oppressively by race\, gender expression\, disability\, class\, sexual orientation\, religious practice\, and political affiliation. Her work invites a re-figuration of disability as a political and cultural experience as opposed to a clinical diagnosis.

SUMMARY:Connect with the Iyengar Tradition
DESCRIPTION:An afternoon workshop with Michael Lucey\nHave you ever thought about what makes Iyengar Yoga unique? In this workshop we will focus our attention on how BKS Iyengar developed his approach to yoga over his decades of personal practice and teaching. We will watch a few clips of BKS Iyengar and his children\, Prashant and Geeta\, teaching\, and take inspiration from their ways of giving instructions\, their ways of referring to the elements (earth\, water\, fire\, air\, space) in the asanas\, and their ways of helping students bring the breath and mind into the practice of asana. \nThis workshop is appropriate for those with at least 6 months of experience doing yoga. During our afternoon together\, we will do all different kinds of poses\, including standing and inversions. Come prepared to work hard and also to enhance your insight into what gives the yoga of BKS Iyengar its special qualities. \nThis workshop is part of the membership drive for our national Iyengar Yoga association. It is free to anyone who becomes a member of IYNAUS\, the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States\, or who renews their current membership. If you are not yet a member of IYNAUS\, join today at iynaus.org. If you are already an IYNAUS member\, that is great – you can come to the workshop for free\, but be sure to renew!!! \nWhile this workshop is free\, you must become a member of IYNAUS to participate. Become one today! \nSpace is limited to 25 participants\, so please pre-register. \nPlease bring your copy of your current IYNAUS membership receipt along to the workshop as proof of payment. Or\, come at least fifteen minutes early and sign up for IYNAUS membership at the studio on the day of the workshop. \n  \n \n\nWhy become a member of IYNAUS?\nIYNAUS is the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States\, our not-for-profit organization responsible for promoting the art\, science and philosophy of yoga according to the teachings of B. K. S. Iyengar in the United States. \nAs a member of IYNAUS\, you will receive monthly emails offering information to help with your practice; you will become connected to and receive news about the Iyengar Yoga community nationally and internationally; and you will support the growth of the Iyengar Yoga tradition.  IYNAUS has many functions – it provides guidelines for training teachers\, holds annual certification assessments\, and maintains a code of ethics for its teachers. It also produces a biannual magazine\, sponsors conventions\, conferences\, and continuing education workshops\, operates a store\, maintains an archive of Iyengar Yoga materials and publishes a national directory of Certified Teachers. \nMembership in IYNAUS starts at $75\, or $100 if you also join our regional association\, the Iyengar Yoga Association of Northern California\, which gains you additional benefits at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. \n

SUMMARY:Adeline Yoga 10th Birthday Party! A Community Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration to honor the life and legacy of BKS Iyengar and Adeline Yoga. \n\nThis community event will celebrate both the birthday of BKS Iyengar and the 10th Anniversary of Adeline Yoga Studio.  And bring us together for a holiday party! \nWe will gather at 5:30 pm for a potluck dinner.  At 6:30 pm we will have a short program with a short puja and story telling led by Victoria Austin.  Then a community kirtan led by the angelic voice of Francesca Nicosia. \nThere is an important spiritual component to the practice of yoga that often gets less attention then the physical aspects of the practice.  First\, we will eat together.  Then the community puja will involve the lighting of ghee lamps and the use of auspicious symbols to offer gratitude for the personal ways BKS Iyengar impacted each of our lives.  Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher and Zen Priest Victoria Austin be our keynote speaker\, reflecting on the life and significance of BKS Iyengar himself.  Of course\, we will also offer stories of Adeline Yoga Studio over the last ten years and eat cake.  The evening will be complete when we chant together! \nThe Iyengars use chants to bring them deeper into their practice\, and closer to self-realization.  You will have an opportunity to learn some of these traditional chants including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali\, the Guru Strotram and kirtan chants for a variety of important dieties. No musical experience is needed and you don’t need to sound good.  Simply being in the room\, you will benefit from the experience and contribute to its success.  This is the power of chant! \nFree to all. \nWondering what to bring?  A vegetarian dish or beverage to share\, and your own plate and silverware. \nIyengar yogi potlucks are the best potlucks and so much fun! If your dish is gluten-free\, nut-free or vegan (dairy and egg free)\, we appreciate if you label your dish as such so that those with food sensitivities can enjoy your offering. \n\nWondering what to wear?  An Adeline yoga t-shirt if you have one!  There have been so many over the years to choose from. \n\nWant to help out?  We will need volunteers on the day of the event to make it a success.  Email leah@adelineyoga.com with your interest. \nIf you would like to make a monetary donation\, proceeds will support the cost of putting on the event plus we will make a donation to the Bellur Foundation for projects that BKS Iyengar initiated in his home village in India. \n\nABOUT OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER\n \nVictoria Austin has studied yoga for over 40 years. She holds an Intermediate Senior I teaching certificate and responsibility which includes teacher training and therapeutics. She is on the teacher training faculty of the Iyengar Institute of San Francisco.  Victoria offers public yoga classes at San Francisco Zen Center and the Abode of Iyengar Yoga and serves as an assessor of the next generation of Iyengar yoga teachers. \nVictoria is also a Zen priest and an active Dharma teacher at the San Francisco Zen Center. \nVictoria begins afresh every day\, and regularly renews her training with the Iyengars in India\, and Manouso Manos in San Francisco. Victoria also offers workshops in Pranayama throughout the year.  Find out more about Victoria on her website at http://www.victoriaaustin.org \nABOUT OUR KIRTAN LEADER\nFrancesca Nicosia has been chanting and leading kirtan for over a decade. She grew up in a musical family — her mother an opera singer and father an organist — and started playing piano and singing in choirs at a young age. She was first exposed to the sacred music of India during a semester abroad in Northern India. While living at Shoshoni Yoga Retreat in Colorado\, chanting became an integral part of her daily practice. She was blessed to play with members of the ashram’s acclaimed kirtan band\, Shiva’s Garden and study classical Indian singing with Megan Yalkut. Francesca regularly led kirtan at the Eldorado Mountain Yoga Ashram and the Denver Ashram before moving to the Bay Area in 2010. Francesca is an active member of the Adeline Community. She teaches Yoga for Every Body on Monday nights and is a graduate of the Sadhana Studies program. Chanting is her musical prayer and offering on the path of devotion\, or Bhakti Yoga. She is grateful to share her deep love for this devotional practice as a way to open the heart\, still the mind and take refuge in our innermost experience of the Divine. SUMMARY:Permission to Play with Carrie Owerko
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, October 24th\n11 am – 1:30 pm\n3:30 – 5:30 pm \nPermission to Play – Riding the Edge in Your Practice & Teaching \nIntegrating our personal practice into our teaching practice is a never ending experiment that – when it goes well – provides a safe container to explore our personal edges and find our unique voice. Permission to play is permission to not know\, to be awkward\, to succeed and to fail and thus to learn. \nWhen we allow play or “unknowing” to be a part of our practice\, we can drop our ego needs of clinging to being right\, or smart or perfect and open the doorway to a more intimate connection with ourselves and others. When we change our perspective on our practice and teaching from wanting to perfect the pose to one of an ongoing learning process then we can find more humor and joy in our practice. \nIn this workshop we will explore some of the many ways to play with the interweaving of personal practice and teaching. \nOur morning session will include and active energetic practice. The afternoon will be restorative in nature. \nThis workshop is geared toward yoga teachers and serious practitioners. \n \n  \nTuition:\n$105 early bird special – register by October 5th\n$120 regular rate – Save when you sign up for the full workshop\n$70 for the morning session / $55 for the afternoon session \nAdeline Yoga members receive a 10% discount on all regular prices. Not a member? Join now! \n \n  \n  \n  \n[clear-line] \n  \nCarrie Owerko has been teaching yoga and exploring the relationship between body\, breath and mind for several years. She holds a Senior Intermediate Iyengar teaching credential and continues her studies with the Iyengar family by traveling to India on a regular basis\, as well as by continuous and in-depth studies with her yoga teacher\, Patricia Walden. Over the years she has performed in and co-choreographed many yoga demonstrations\, including Live: Light on Life\, presented at City Center in NYC during BKS Iyengar’s Light on Life US National Book Tour in 2005. \nCuriosity\, openness\, and affection are of the utmost importance in her approach to Iyengar Yoga\, as is the integration of science\, yoga philosophy\, and the poetic imagination in the yoga practice. Most importantly\, she loves to explore the relationship of discipline and playfulness and is a firm believer in the power of controlled folly.
