SUMMARY:What's your Dosha?
DESCRIPTION:According to Ayurveda\, India’s ancient medical system and the sister science of yoga\, every being has a unique combination of the three fundamental energies called doshas – Vata\, Pitta and Kapha. We are born with a specific individual combination of these three energies. This individual combination is called our base constitution. Due to the seasons\, diet\, age\, environment\, lifestyle\, and other influences we shift away from this given balance. Yet\, optimal health in Ayurveda  is when we are living in harmony with our base constitution. \nAyurveda provides us many personalized techniques to keep our doshic constitution in balance through food\, life-style choices and other self-care techniques. In this fun and interactive workshop you’ll learn how to determine your ayurvedic base constitution and your current doshic balance. Then\, we will discuss recommendations of how to keep yourself in harmony in the new year. \nThis is a free workshop open to anyone interested in self-care. \nDonations accepted on the day of the event – proceeds go to the Yoga Blessings Fund \n \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:\n \nKatharina Rock is a certified Ayurveda Health Counselor and consults with clients on individualized lifestyle\, diet and herbal therapies in Oakland. In 2009 she started studying Ayurveda and graduated from the California College of Ayurveda in Nevada City\, CA. \n\nKatharina is taking currently new clients as part of her Clinical Ayurveda Specialist internship where she will work with clients under the supervision of an experienced faculty member of the CCA. Please contact katharina@ayurvedaforbalance.com for further information.

SUMMARY:Remembering Geeta Iyengar
DESCRIPTION:Friday December 28th\n6 – 7:30 pm\nYou are invited to a special event honoring Geeta Iyengar. Geetaji passed away on December 16th at the age of 74 in Pune.   In the Indian tradition\, a ceremony is held on the 13th day after someone has passed.  In this manner\, we will gather to celebrate our Geetaji’s life and contributions. \nGeeta was the daughter of BKS Iyengar and started teaching yoga at age 16.  She functioned as the main teacher in our Iyengar community for decades\, and especially since her father’s passing.   She wrote and taught extensively\, traveling throughout the world while running the women’s classes\, therapy classes\, teacher education and much more at RIMYI in Pune. Though she suffered from multiple serious health conditions\, Geeta worked a full schedule – generously teaching\, lecturing and directly guiding her students – until her very last day of life. \nFor many local students and teachers here in the Bay Area\, Geeta was our most direct inspiration. As a writer and teacher\, a yogi and Ayurvedic doctor\, Geeta’s influence can be seen world wide.  Whether or not you ever met Geeta\, she has made a direct impact on your life. \nIt is impossible to adequately convey what an influential and bright presence Geeta was in our lives. She was truly “a gem for women” and men all over the world. She leaves behind a powerful legacy of commitment to the practice of Iyengar yoga.   Her one-of-a-kind dedication to yoga was singular in focus – dedicating herself the students\, the practice and the teaching over her 74 years of life.  She held our world-wide Iyengar community together like a lioness. \nThis event will include chant\, stories from Geeta’s life and a videos of her teaching.  Heather and others will speak on her personal experience being in Pune for Geeta’s last days.  We invite anyone and everyone to come to learn more about Geeta – her life and impact on our lives. \nJoin us for community and inspiration. \nFree \nOpen to all \n  \nWhat to bring:\nPlease feel free to bring stories and items for the altar such as flowers or sweets to share. \nIf you have a copy of the Yoga Sutras and/or Bhagavad Gita that you like to use for chanting\, please bring it \n  \nLivestream\nWe do plan to livestream at least part of the event for our out-of-town friends.  Once the event starts\, you can log onto https://adelineyoga.daily.co/geeta  to participate.  You don’t need any special software\, just click on the link anytime after Friday 6 pm when the event starts. \nAlso\, follow us on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adelineyogastudio/ We will also livestream from there.

SUMMARY:Staying Healthy During Winter with Ananda Ma
DESCRIPTION:Special Series: Staying Healthy During Winter\n4 sessions: Sundays December 2 thru Dec 23 from 5:15 – 6:30 pm\nJoin us for all or drop in\nTaoist philosophy conceptualizes universal balance in terms of yin and yang\, complementary forces that govern the universe. Yin characteristics are cool\, wet\, slow\, feminine\, and quiet\, whereas yang is warm\, dry\, fast\, masculine\, extroverted. Winter is the yin season – a time for storing and conserving energy in the way a farmer stores food for the cold months ahead. \nYou can think of your yoga practice as an investment in your ‘energy paycheck.’ Don’t use up what little winter energy you have with overactivity and added stress\, learn yoga practices to help you restore and renew. \nWinter’s restful\, introspective\, yin nature lends itself to important yoga practices that focus on on the heart and large intestine meridians that run along the chest cavity as well as along the inner and outer arms. Consider this an invitation to slow down and surrender to the joy of the present moment with an exploration of heart openers\, upper back and shoulder stretches\, while gentle inversions will lengthen the backs of the legs and neck to help lower the stress hormones that compromise the immune system. Over our weeks together\, we will focus on conditioning the lungs and respiratory tract\, stimulating the lymphatic system to oust toxins from the body\, and re-oxygenate the blood to calm your body and restore your mind. SUMMARY:Exploring Compassion with Anneke Faas
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, November 18th\, 12:45-3:15 pm\nExploring Compassion\nA Benefit Workshop for Adeline Yoga’s Social Justice Programming\nCompassion seems to be in short supply these days. Yet compassion is a core part of the yogi’s tool kit – an essential virtue that we use for self-exploration and community interaction. We draw upon compassion for ourselves in order to acknowledge and work through our own suffering and the suffering of others. Compassion can only be cultivated when we allow ourselves the time and space to slow down and rest our body and mind. \nThis workshop is part of a series were we explore the different ways yoga is “skill in action”. What does a modern day yogi’s life look like off the mat\, inside and outside the studio? Michelle Cassandra Johnson’s book Yoga\, Skill in Action describes how skill in action involves developing discernment which allows one to respond to difficult situations rather than react only. One of the primary tools for developing “skill in action” is through the practice of compassion. Compassion requires connection: connection to ourselves\, to other beings\, to nature. Compassion requires that we acknowledge that we are all in this together. \nJoin Anneke for an afternoon of restoration\, using yoga asana and pranayama as a field for developing compassion to power our positive social action in the world. \nThis class is appropriate for all levels of students \n  \nDonation based workshop\nSuggested rate: $45\nDonate for yourself or for others to attend \n  \nClick here to register yourself and attend the workshop:\n \n  \nNot Attending?  Click here to donate to the program and provide a scholarship:\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:\nAnneke Faas is a certified Iyengar yoga instructor at the Intermediate Junior 2 level. She was inspired by the precision and genius of Mr. Iyengar’s teaching at the age of 14 during her first year of high school where she was an avid athlete. Teaching yoga in college to her peers\, Anneke started her teacher training with Nancy Stechart and Leslie Bradley in 2002. She continued her studies upon moving to New York City and graduated from the premiere Iyengar Yoga Association of Greater New York Teacher Training program under the mentorship of the late Mary Dunn. SUMMARY:Starting the Conversation: Being Close to Blackness
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 21st at 7 pm\nStarting the Conversation: Being Close to Blackness\n\n\n\n\nBeing close to blackness is the deepest\, most personal aspect of working with systematic racism. Svadhyaya is the yogic practice of self-study and self-reflection.  Through self-reflection we can identify and root out our habits\, biases\, and histories that are holding us back from being close to others. Through self-transformation\, we can transform the world around us. \nMany white-identified folks may not consider themselves racist and yet may have hidden or underlying biases that are creating a barrier between themselves and black people in their community. These barriers\, prevent us from really truly seeing blackness\, from being close to blackness\, and from advocating for true change. Aaron Johnson will facilitate this group\, helping white-identified folks to reflect and discover personal\, community\, and cultural barriers particularly as they effect our yoga communities. What is preventing black people from participating in highly white-dominated yoga spaces\, no matter how well-meaning the community is? \nStart the conversation with us. Work to understand and include blackness as part of your personal work\, your yogic journey and your commitment to dismantle systemic racism in your community and beyond. \nAaron is well-known in the East Bay\, working closely with Jennie Pearl and Porsha Breed as part of Holistic Resistance.  He regularly facilitates meetings on “Getting Close to Blackness” for Wake Up and the teachers at Adeline Yoga. \nThis workshop is for any student or teacher of yoga who wants to cultivate awareness and develop the courage to act.  This conversation will be geared towards white identified people\, AND ALL ARE WELCOME.  No experience needed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSliding Scale\n$10 – 25 \nPlease pre-register.  You are welcome to pay $25 online\, or simply register and pay the sliding scale at the door. \nAll are encouraged to attend regardless of ability to pay. \nNeed help registering?  Email us directly to info@adelineyoga.com. \n  \n \nAbout Aaron Johnson\nI am an earth builder\, a teacher of closeness\, and an activist. I graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in 2007 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts. I use intimacy to dismantle racism; I have made a lifelong commitment to use the skills I possess to end racism. The tools I frequently use for that end are speaking\, teaching\, closeness to blackness\, and minimalism. Deep connection is one of the most powerful tools one can use in dismantling racism. \nMy goal is to help white people slow down their reality enough to see blackness\, primarily through the use of deep questions. I also use questions as a lens that white people can use to look at themselves and see how their own wounds and trauma from racism are stopping them from being close to black people. I am a firm believer that if you cannot get close to black people\, you cannot be a true advocate for them. Being close to blackness is the revolution. SUMMARY:Yoga + Social Justice: Skill in Action
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, August 5th at 1 pm\nYoga + Social Justice: Skill in Action\nReading and Conversation\nAre you are interested in the intersection of yoga and justice\, the role of contemplative practice in activists spaces and exploring your relationship to power and privilege? Author\, yoga teacher\, social justice activist and licensed clinical social worker\, Michelle Johnson\, is offering a book reading and discussion on the intersection of yoga and justice based on her new book Skill in Action\, Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World. \nThe workshop is not a yoga class. It will include contemplative practice\, journaling\, self-reflection and small group discussions. Show up to learn more about yourself and to identify ways to inspire justice.  You will leave with a deeper connection to self\, your community and all beings. \n“Skill in Action” will be available for purchase at Adeline Yoga.  The event will conclude with a book signing so you can have Michelle sign your book! \nSliding Scale\n$10 – 25 \nPlease pre-register.  You are welcome to pay $25 online\, or simply register and pay the sliding scale at the door. \nAll are encouraged to attend regardless of ability to pay. \n  \n \n  \nAbout the book:\nSkill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World asks readers to explore the deeply transformational practice of yoga\, and become social change agents so that they can create a world that is just for all. \nThe book explores liberation for ourselves and others\, while asking us to engage in our own agency\, whether that manifests as activism\, volunteer work\, or changing our relationships with others and ourselves. \nSkill in Action clearly defines power and privilege\, oppression\, liberation and suffering\, and invites readers to take steps to make changes in their lives to create a world that allows all of us to be free. The end of each chapter\, includes a sample practice so that readers can put the wisdom gained from the book into action in their lives.  These sample practices include: breathwork\, asana\, meditation and interpersonal relational work. \nIn an effort to move towards liberation for all\, the practices extend beyond the individual to offer resources and tools to shift institutional policies and procedures in a culture that has left all of us negatively impacted by white supremacy. \nSkill in Action is heavily influenced by the Bhagavad Gita an ancient yogic text that calls us to live into our dharma and duty even when many distractions entice us to move off our our path.  Skill in Action calls people and communities to take action and to not become complicit by becoming complacent. It asks that we take the powerful practice of yoga and use it to create a world that makes space for all\, that values all and that speaks truth to power. \n  \n \nAbout the author\nMichelle Johnson is a yoga teacher\, anti-racism trainer and author based in Portland\, Oregon. Last year she wrote\, edited\, published and successfully crowdfunded “Skill in Action: Radicalizing Your Yoga Practice to Create a Just World”. This book asks readers to explore the deeply transformational practice of yoga\, and to become a social change agent to create a world that is just for all. The book explores liberation for everyone\, while inviting readers to enact agency\, whether that manifests as activism\, volunteer work\, or changing relationships with others and ourselves. Francesca and the Adeline Yoga “house band” will lead us in kirtan\, a joyful practice of call-and-response chanting and devotional practice of Bhakti yoga. \nSinging as a group connects us as a community and is an opportunity to open the heart\, still the mind and experience joy in our connection to the Divine. \nNo musical experience necessary\, just an open heart and mind. \nSunday\, July 15 | 7:00-8:30 pm \nSuggested Donation: $10 – $20 cash at the door \nFrancesca Nicosia\, vocals and harmonium\nSwetha Rao-Devigere\, vocals\nDoug Chermak\, percussion\nKenny Shea Dinkin\, guitar \nAbout your musical leaders\nFrancesca Nicosia s a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher who has been chanting and leading kirtan for over a decade. She grew up in a musical family — her mother an opera singer and father an organist — and started playing piano and singing in choirs at a young age. She studied vocal performance in college and was first exposed to the sacred music of India during a semester abroad in Northern India. While living at Shoshoni Yoga Retreat in Colorado\, chanting became an integral part of her daily sadhana. She was blessed to play with members of the ashram’s acclaimed kirtan band\, Shiva’s Garden\, and study classical Northern Indian singing with Megan Yalkut\, a student of Ali Akbar Khan. Francesca regularly led kirtan at the Eldorado Mountain Yoga Ashram and the Denver Ashram before moving to the Bay Area in 2010. Chanting is her musical prayer and offering on the path of devotion\, or Bhakti yoga. She is grateful to share her deep love for this devotional practice as a way to open the heart\, still the mind and take refuge in our innermost experience of the Divine. \nSwetha Rao-Devigere has been singing since she learned to speak and began performing for audiences at the age of three. Born and raised in Bangalore\, India\, she hails from a family of devout Vaishnavites who follow the path of Bhakti yoga and offer daily worship reciting Vedic hymns and chants. Her mother and extended family are practitioners and enthusiasts of classical Indian music and Bharatnatyam dance\, which led Swetha to train in South-Indian classical (Carnatic) music for several years. Under the tutelage and patronage of her versatile British-Indian music teacher\, she also studied Western music through her school years and performed as a lead vocalist in numerous musical theater productions\, concerts\, choirs and competitions. She continued her musical journey while in college\, as a lead vocalist for a rock and roll band in Bangalore. Shortly after moving to the Bay Area\, Swetha was delighted to find and become a part of the Adeline Yoga community where she is currently training in her second year of the Sadhana Studies program. She is thrilled to be re-united with music through her musically-gifted friends at Adeline. She enjoys performing vocals and harmonies at kirtans while she continues to explore all the wisdom\, love and joy that Yoga has to offer. \nDouglas Chermak has practiced Iyengar Yoga since 2001 and is a graduate of the inaugural Adeline Yoga Sadhana Studies program. He has studied Middle Eastern and Indian percussion since 2006 with teachers including Aharon Wheels Bolsta and Faisal Zedan. In addition to the Adeline yoga house band\, he also plays percussion for kirtan in the Bay Area with Carolina Grace Lorenzo. Doug’s day job is as a plaintiff’s side environmental attorney with the Oakland-based firm Lozeau Drury LLP\, where his practice emphasizes the protection of water quality. \n\nKenny Shea Dinkin has been studying Iyengar Yoga since 1988. By day he is a video game designer and creative director best known for his work on Diner Dash\, The ClueFinders and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? He currently heads up story development for Candy Crush. Kenny is a visual artist and songwriter and plays in the Oakland-based power pop band The Secret Identities.
