SUMMARY:Yoga for Healing the Knees with Kelly Sobanski
DESCRIPTION:Yoga for Knee Pain\nwith Kelly Sobansky\nNovember 7th 2 – 4:30 PST\nYoga can be an excellent solution to address many knee issues – helping you to manage pain\, reduce inflammation and regain both your physical stability and mobility. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn main techniques to work with your knees so that you can take care of yourself in regular yoga classes\, practice at home and improve your knee function. We will work with how to modify poses that are commonly taught in class. Specialized poses for knee health will also be taught.  Kelly will teach a sequence that you can repeat on your own so you can encourage healing through practice and refinement. This sequence will also be particularly soothing for the hips\, sacrum and low back. \nEach student will learn how to observe personal alignment in order to help figure out root causes of knee pain\, and how to develop personal practices to help yourself. \nThis course is best for those with at least 6 months of consistent Iyengar Yoga practice. Please have one backless yoga chair\, two blocks\, two yoga belts\, and three blankets. Our sequence will require you to be able to get up and down from the floor without the assistance of another person. \nThis workshop is open to anyone interested in learning Iyengar yoga therapy for the knee joint. This class is also beneficial for teacher and teachers-in-training who want to help students with knee pain. \n  \nTuition: \n$45 – Early Bird Special – register by October 28 and save $10 \n$55 per person \n \n  \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR\nKelly Sobanski is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher at the Intermediate Junior III level. Based in Indiana\, she has studied directly with BKS Iyengar\, Geeta Iyengar and Abhijata Shridar including six months of study at the Iyengar Institute in Pune\, India. Kelly has deep knowledge of Iyengar Yoga therapeutics and pain management\, gleaned from her own practice and eight years assisting in Lois Steinberg’s therapy classes at Iyengar Yoga Champaign-Urbana and her time at the Iyengar Institute in Pune. Kelly has worked with many students with intricate and in-depth physical challenges. Kelly inspires practitioners at all levels to cultivate wisdom\, intuition and luminance through the endless learning that yoga unveils.  She is also a dedicated volunteer including past President of the Board of Directors for the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Mid-West. \nFor twelve years\, Kelly has been dedicated to healing headaches and nerve pain through Iyengar Yoga due to a car accident. This accident was literally a major blow to her brain because she had already suffered a brain injury as a child. Kelly spent time as a therapy student at RIMYI with BKS Iyengar\, Geeta Iyengar\, & Stephanie Quirk. In Addition\, Kelly was taught by Lois Steinberg how to open her chest\, help the curve in her neck and bring flexibility into her spine. Once the headaches improved\, Kelly became an assistant in Lois’s weekly therapy classes. With this first-hand experience\, she understands how entangled headaches and nerve pain can be. She strives to help others not to give up and to find ways to bring healing to life. Kelly is a Level 3 CIYT and is certified to teach Iyengar Yoga (RIMYI style) Therapy classes. \nOpen to all levels. \nTuition: \n\n

She has been a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT) since 1983. \nShe teaches ongoing classes at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco (IYISF) and is also an assessor for the National Certification Committee. This provides her with a deep understanding of Iyengar Yoga. \nBorn on the Isle of Skye\, Scotland\, Janet has travelled to many parts of the world offering workshops and retreats. She has also taught at the Yoga Journal conference in San Francisco. \nBefore devoting herself to teaching exclusively\, Janet was the Program Director at IYISF. In 2001 she co-chaired the National Iyengar Yoga Conference in Pasadena where 850 students studied under Geeta S. Iyengar (BKS Iyengar’s daughter). \nHer style of teaching is faithful to the ancient tradition of yoga\, but is infused with love and light. Janet believes in sharing the joy that she has found in yoga with all who come in contact with her. This along with the technical skills she has accumulated over many years of personal practice\, study and teaching make her a much sought after teacher wherever she goes. \n  \nABOUT THE YOGA BLESSINGS FUND:\nAdeline Yoga is committed to supporting diversity in our yoga community and social justice. The Yoga Blessings Fund is a scholarship program that encourages participation in Iyengar Yoga at Adeline Yoga. The Fund offers partial and full scholarships for nearly any class or workshop. It primarily focuses on deep studies programs such as Yoga for Life and teacher training opportunities including Sadhana Studies. \n  \nWe established this fund in 2012 for several reasons: \n\nto provide access and support to people who come from backgrounds that are not well represented in most yoga studios\nto support current students if they lose a job or experience financial hardship\nto support those who want a deeper yoga education\, but cannot afford the entire cost of longer programs\nto support newer students who cannot attend the community classes due to their schedule.\n\nScholarships in the Yoga Blessing Fund are not based solely on need. We are committed to broadening access to yoga by encouraging practitioners who come from backgrounds that are not well represented in most yoga studios\, or who come from communities that might be less familiar with the benefits of a yoga practice. These scholarships are an invitation to participate. Students of color\, those living with disabilities or who identify as LGBTQ are especially encouraged to inquire about this opportunity. \n  \nThe Yoga Blessings Fund is one part of a comprehensive approach to accessibility and community engagement.  For example\, we have 3 sliding-scale community classes every week\, social justice programming including a teachers group and speaker series\, and an active workstudy program. \n  \nOur Yoga Blessings fund is the scholarship arm of our social justice initiatives.   \nIt is administered according to: \n\nFinancial need. Financial need is defined as the inability to pay the full tuition fee for the program\, based on an individual’s total financial situation (This should include assets and cash flow).\nCurrently enrolled students of Adeline Yoga.\nUnder-represented populations at the studio/Iyengar yoga.\n\nThe Yoga Blessings program is funded in three ways: \n\nIncome from overall studio sales.\nCurrent students donate classes and money.\nFundraising events such as this.\n\nFor more details\, email info@adelineyoga.com

SUMMARY:Pranayama: Changing the World Breath by Breath
DESCRIPTION:PRANAYAMA: Changing the World Breath by Breath\nA Day-Long Retreat Saturday October 3rd 11 – 1 and 3 – 5 p.m. with Victoria Austin\nThe work of anti-racism begins with settling the self.  Developing a heart and mind of anti-racism initiates positive change in the world. How do we use the tools of pranayama to settle reactivity\, find deep nourishment\, and meet the potential of our natural resting state? \nThis one-day retreat supports practitioners to become grounding in body and mind to skillfully meet the  causes and conditions of racism. We will explore the intimate communion between individual and universal experience through simple\, restful sequences suitable for daily practice. \nThis workshop is best suited to practitioners who want to study anti-racism from the body to the brain. Because this work requires a shared body language of stability\, mobility\, and self-study\, the prerequisite is 6 months’ experience studying Iyengar yoga with a CIYT. \nThis workshop will include two sessions of philosophy\, pranayama\, and discussion. A few simple asanas may be included. \nIf you have any questions about this retreat\, please email info@adelineyoga.com \nPREPARATION: To get the most out of this workshop\, please familiarize yourself with concepts in these three books: \n\nMy Grandmother’s Hands by Resmaa Menakem: “Your Soul Nerve” Chapter 16\nThe Inner Work of Racial Justice by Rhonda Magee: “Awareness of Breathing” and “Body Scan” practices for grounding\nLight on Pranayama by BKS Iyengar: “Savasana” chapter\n\nNote:  If you want to get started with My Grandmother’s Hands early\, we have a reading group starting Sept 22nd. Details here. \nTUITION: \n\nFree for people of color\n\n$75 – regular rate\n\n$120 – Pay for yourself and support a scholarship for another person to participate.\nThose with greater financial capacity are invited to support your personal learning and sponsor another person to attend.\n\nPlease pre-register by Sept 30th so you get the zoom link and other preparatory materials.\n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor:\n Shosan Victoria Austin began practicing both Zen and yoga in 1971. In the Iyengar Yoga tradition\, Victoria is certified as a Senior Intermediate. In the Soto Zen tradition\, Victoria is entrusted as a Dharma heir in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi\, an international priest of the Soto School\, and a Dharma teacher at San Francisco Zen Center. A teacher of teachers\, Victoria is one of the founding leaders in the Iyengar Yoga community in the San Francisco Bay Area.  In addition to supporting the practice of both yoga and Zen students in diverse settings including workplaces\, institutions\, and homes\, Victoria teaches public yoga classes\, trains teachers and offers workshops at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco\, and serves as an assessor of the next generation of Iyengar yoga teachers. Victoria continues her studies with senior Zen and yoga teachers\, including Sojun Mel Weitsman and the Iyengar family. Victoria’s practice goal is to wake up each moment in a way that benefits beings. Victoria’s teaching goals include transmitting Zen Buddhism as a yogic path and Yoga as a path of awareness. Keeping faith with each tradition\, she offers classes and workshops accessible to a wide variety of abilities and circumstances.

SUMMARY:My Grandmother’s Hands Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:My Grandmother’s Hands Reading Group\nA continuation of Adeline’s “Yoga and Racism” discussion series\nMeets every other Tuesday 7:30-8:30pm PST\nStarts Tuesday September 22\, 2020\nIn My Grandmother’s Hands\, author\, social worker\, and somatic healer Resmaa Menakem invites us to recognize how the trauma and oppression of racism is experienced in our bodies and minds\, both for people of color and for white people. The book provides both discussion of trauma and race\, and also body centered practice exercises designed to help us examine our relationship with racism and to enter into a healing journey. This group is a place to engage collectively in these practices. We will follow Menakem’s book at the rate of approximately one chapter a week\, and come together to practice and to reflect on the material. \nAs an embodied practice of liberation\, yoga provides us with tools for increasing awareness of our bodies and our capacities for perception. And yet\, we can not separate our practice of yoga from the larger context of racism\, colonialism\, and white body supremacy in the United States. This group is an invitation to practice embodied mindfulness as a way of developing collective\, anti-racist resilience and moving towards radical change and racial justice. This is difficult work. It is even more difficult when done alone or in isolation. By holding this group\, we seek to deepen our relationships with each other\, increase our accountability to each other\, and thus increase our impact in our yoga communities and beyond. \nThis reading group is geared toward white yoga practitioners who are committed to deepening anti-racist practices so that we can work to undo the ways that racism and white body supremacy live in and through us. We recognize that\, as Menakem emphasizes\, we have to do this work ourselves so as not to put the burden of undoing racism on BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, People of Color). By “white” we are referring to people with European ancestry\, ethnicity\, or religious backgrounds\, who are “white passing” or benefit from racial/light-skin privilege\, or who otherwise benefit from white privilege. \nIf you are a POC or of a mixed-race background and wish to participate\, please reach out to the group facilitators through info@adelineyoga.com so that we discuss ways for you to be comfortable and safe in this virtual space. \n \nNote:  Adeline Yoga does offer BIPOC-only space through our Monthly Restorative Yoga for People of Color class. \nTuition:\n\nWhen registering on Mindbody you can choose to pay the suggested donation rates: \n$108 – for all 13 sessions\n$10 – for a single session \nOR choose the sliding scale option (for a single session or all sessions) and then pay what you can via Paypal: https://www.paypal.me/adelineyoga\nDonations very appreciated but not mandatory\, No one turned away for lack of funds.\n100% of all proceeds go to Yoga Blessings Fund Scholarships.\n\n\nPrior to the session you will receive a unique zoom log-in and specific instructions. \nFirst time on Zoom with us? Check out our tip sheet! Our tips will help you get ready for your first class with us. \n \nPrior to our first gathering on 9/22\, please read the introduction and Chapter 1 (through page 26) \nOrder a copy of the book:\nResmaa Menakem’s website: https://www.resmaa.com/books/ \nBlack-owned bookstores\, including Marcus Books in Oakland\, CA: https://lithub.com/you-can-order-today-from-these-black-owned-independent-bookstores/ \nAbout your group faciliators:\nJacqueline Shea Murphy\, Ph.D.\, (she/her/hers) (Welsh/English/Irish/French Canadian)\, has been teaching about race and dance for over two decades as a professor of Critical Dance Studies in UC Riverside’s Dance department. SUMMARY:Yoga for a Healthy Back: Hip Opening & Lower Back
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, July 26\nfrom 12:45 -3:15 pm\nwith Sachiko Willis\nLower back pain is interactive with the strength and mobility of the hips. Sitting for long periods of time at a desk or in a car leads to tight\, weak hips and lower back problems. Even the activities that we do such as walking\, running and biking\, contribute to hip tightness without the balancing effect of mobility and openness in the hips. \nIn this workshop\, Sachiko will help you explore the interaction between your hips and lower back in an effort to manage pain and improve well-being and performance. This course will give you exercises you can do to manage pain as well as practices for preventing future pain. \nThis course is good for those new to yoga\, or wanting to get back into yoga. It is also appropriate for people with muscle strain\, disc herniation\, scoliosis. \nDue to “shelter in place” restrictions this workshop will be held via Zoom. While we miss the in-person aspect\, this is an excellent opportunity to learn how to take care of yourself at home. Sachiko will lead you through using common household items as props and help you develop a sequence you can practice daily. She will get to see you in your home setting and advise you on what to do.  You will have time to ask questions.  Plus\, you will have a handout and the class recording to support you afterwards. \nThis course is limited to 22 participants. After class\, all participants will get a handout with what was covered\, and a recording of the class. \n\nTuition: \n$45 – Early Bird Special – register by July 19 and save $10 \n$55 per person \n  \nRegistration: \nYou must pre-register. SUMMARY:Developing Courage Through Yoga: A benefit workshop with Sachiko Willis
DESCRIPTION:DEVELOPING COURAGE THROUGH YOGA\nA benefit workshop with Sachiko Nishizawa Willis\nSunday June 28th from 12:45 – 3:15 pm\nLife these days requires us to conjure tremendous courage. We need courage to act\, courage to look within\, courage to take care\, courage to be present and courage to cultivate compassion among many types of courage. \nIn Sanskrit\, courage is known as virya. BKS Iyengar said that our practice is not complete without virya! He also taught that we need faith (sraddha)\, mindfulness (smrti)\, meditative immersion (samadhi) and wisdom (prajna) to support our efforts. \nAs practitioners of yoga we have experienced that wise use of props and time\, breath and body also help us to feel courageous out in the world. Participants in this workshop will have an opportunity to explore the wide variety of yogic approaches that help us summon and maintain our own bravery – and learn how share it with others who may benefit. \nThis special benefit workshop with Sachiko will be held via zoom. It will include 2 hours of asana and pranayama followed by virtual tea time for discussion. It is open to all levels\, geared toward those who have some experience with Iyengar Yoga. \nProceeds from this workshop will go toward Adeline Yoga’s Social Justice Initiatives. \n  \nTuition:\nSuggested:  $45 – register here.  \nOR Donate what you can – Donate here and we’ll add you to the roster \nSelf-identified people of color/activists/essential workers on the front line pay nothing unless you want to contribute to the cause by donating here. SUMMARY:Strength and Stability II with Yogi Zain
DESCRIPTION:Balance\, posture and coordination of movement play a vital role to feel physically stable in our practice. Yoga practice might be driven by a desire to be more flexible. Yet\, if we cannot control our ranges of motion then becoming overly flexible can lead to injury. \nIn this special class the practice will focus on controlling independent joint mobility so that interdependent movements in yoga asanas are more stable. Building strength boosts self-confidence and can bring stability to the emotional body. \nExpect to also explore your core and much more! \nThis class is a continuation of the May session on strength and stability. If you did not attend the first session\, no problem! Please do register. \nThis class will be held live online via Zoom\, Pacific Standard Time. \nThis is appropriate for all levels\, geared toward those who have at least 6 months experience. \n  \n \nTuition: \nThis is priced as a regular class.  Register with your class pass or membership. Or pay $18 drop in. \n  \nRegistration: \nYou must pre-register at least 30 minutes before class. Fifteen minutes prior to class you will receive a unique zoom log-in and specific instructions. \nFirst time on Zoom with us? SUMMARY:Study Group on Racism and Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Study Group on Racism and Yoga\nLed by Jacqueline Shea Murphy and Francesca Nicosia\nTuesdays 7:30 to 8:30 pm – June 23 and June 30 and then every other Tuesday\nDeveloping an asana practice requires periods of discomfort — staying in stretches\, holding difficult balances and kicking up with courage despite fears of collapse. In this study group\, we will tap into the resilience we have been cultivating through asana and use it to sit with difficult discussions around yoga and racism. \nOver the past month\, the United States’ foundational base in white-supremacy\, anti-Black racism\, genocide and colonialism\, has become glaringly obvious. Modern yoga as it is practiced today\, however painful it is to acknowledge\, also benefits from its complicity with this foundation. We\, in solidarity with many yoga practitioners\, want to direct yoga practice as a tool not of racism but of anti-racism. Yet\, transforming foundational structures cannot occur without transforming our ways of thinking. In this group we will work together\, in community\, toward that transformation. \nThis study group is geared toward white yoga practitioners who have done some work around whiteness – folks who are familiar with the concepts of white privilege and white fragility – and are ready to deepen their engagement with these issues. We invite participants who are willing to work together slowly\, carefully and thoughtfully\, with space for reflection and critique. In line with yoga asana practice (not press the foot or turn the leg\, but both)\, we will approach topics with an “and/and” mindset\, where sitting with complexity is expected and encouraged. \nEach session will begin with review of a pre-assigned podcast\, video or short essay. Discussion topics will likely include: \n\n“race-blindness” and racism inside the studio and out\nwhiteness and spiritual bypassing\nindividualism and universalism\npresumptions around seeing\, taking\, owning and selling such as appropriation and commodification\nwhite self-actualization and neo-liberalism\norientalism and exotification\nhegemonies of British colonialism and Hindu nationalism.\n\nThis series is geared towards white folks\, yet open to all. Pre-registration\, willingness to engage the week’s materials and to sit with hard issues is required. \nThe initial two sessions are for the group to form. Plan to attend them both. New participants may will be allowed after that by emailing info@adelineyoga.com \nDates: \nTuesdays\, 7:30 to 8:30 pm held via Zoom \nJune 23 & June 30 \nThen every other Tuesday: \nJuly 14 \nJuly 28 \nAugust 11 \nAugust 25 \nTuition: \n$5+ donation to Adeline’s Yoga Blessings fund encouraged OR you can use your current membership or pass. \nYou can register online and pay $5 that way.  We also are collecting donations for the Yoga Blessings fund here. Suggested donation for the whole series = $60 or $5 for a single session. \nDonations appreciated but not mandatory\, No one turned away for lack of funds. \n\nPrior to the session you will receive a unique zoom log-in and specific instructions. \nFirst time on Zoom with us? Check out our tip sheet! Our tips will help you get ready for your first class with us. \nAbout your group leaders:\nJacqueline Shea Murphy\, Ph.D.\, (she/her/hers) (Welsh/English/Irish/French Canadian)\, has been teaching about race and dance for over two decades as a professor of Critical Dance Studies in UC Riverside’s Dance department. She is the author of “The People Have Never Stopped Dancing”: Native American Modern Dance Histories and co –director of http://icr.ucr.edu/. Jacqueline is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher\, and has been a serious practitioner of Iyengar yoga for over 25 years. \n \nFrancesca Nicosia PhD.\, (she/her/hers) (Italian/Irish/English/Ukrainian/Polish)\, is a medical anthropologist and faculty at UC San Francisco’s Institute for Health & Aging. SUMMARY:The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Potent Wisdom for Modern Times
DESCRIPTION:The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Potent Wisdom for Modern Times\nWednesdays from 7:30 – 8:30 pm\nThree Wednesdays in May: May 6 – 20\, 2020\nwith Heather Haxo Phillips\nJoin us for a free one-hour discussion designed to help you benefit from the teachings of yoga philosophy through these stressful times. The Yoga Sutras are potent in helping us find calm and stability\, especially during this specific time of global pandemic.  This class is for anyone curious about yoga philosophy.  It is an opportunity to delve into specific philosophical concepts and see the connections to our daily lives. \nOver the next month\, we will delve into the Acts of Yoga described in Sutra 2.1.  Ancient yogis observed that three powerful concepts – burning zeal\, studies of the self and sacred texts including mantras\, and surrender to the divine – are the best practices for those who want to calm their agitated minds. \nGeeta Iyengar observed that this one of the most important sutras as she could relate personally to its teaching in her own practice.  Indeed right now\, Sutra 2.1 has universal importance for us all. \nIn our time together\, we will practice the concepts as we learn about them. We will: \n\n\ndiscuss a specific aspect of Sutra 2.1\nchant mantras that promote stability\, calm and healthfulness\ndelve into practices that help us surrender to what is\n\n\nThis program is designed as a series\, though you can certainly drop in for a session or two. During each session you will be given practices to work with during the week. \n\nThis is a community gathering to support and nourish our personal practice and be together.  It is free.   Donations are encouraged!  You can send your donation to paypal.me/adelineyoga \nYou must register 30-min before each class is to start. \n  \n\n \nIf you have a copy of the Yoga Sutras\, you may want to read Sutra 2.1 prior to our gather. \nThere are many commentaries on the Yoga Sutras\, some of our main favorites are by Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by BKS Iyengar\, The Gift of Consciousness by Gitte Bechsgaard and Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Edwin Bryant. \nSome of the benefits that I have personally experienced from exploration of the ancient teachings of Patanjali: \n\nIncreased ability to get quiet and sit with stillness\nChange of perspective on obstacles and ability to work with them vs. against them\nMore authentic connection with the people in my life\nA deeper connection to my community and the concept of lineage\nA personal devotional practice that is a refuge for me\nAccess to my own intuition\nClarity on my soul’s purpose\n\nTuition: \nThis a free event.  Donations can be made here. \nRegistration: \nYou must pre-register at least 30 minutes before class. Fifteen minutes prior to class you will receive a unique zoom log-in and specific instructions. \nFirst time on Zoom with us? Check out our tip sheet! Our tips will help you get ready for your first class with us. \nYou can find out more about our Live Online Programming here \n  \n \n  \nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR\nHeather Haxo Phillips is a certified Senior Iyengar yoga instructor and the Director of Adeline Yoga. DESCRIPTION:Adeline Yoga is pleased to welcome back Deidra Demens\, CIYT from New York City! \nSaturday May 2nd from 3 – 4:30 pm PST\nHappy Hips with Deidra Demens\nFor many of us\, the hips remain uncharted territory. Yet\, freedom in the hips is essential to the health of our knees and low back. \nThe hips serve as the bridge connecting the legs to the trunk. When the hips are tight or blocked in some ways\, we may overcompensate by holding undue tension in the knees and lower back. \nIn this workshop we will work to release tension and stiffness in the hips that will help us balance the pelvis and relieve pain in the lower body. We will create freedom and find proper extension in the spine\, taking weight off the lower back and knees. \nThis class will be held live online via Zoom\, Pacific Standard Time. \nThis is appropriate for all levels\, geared toward those who have at least 6 months experience with Iyengar Yoga. \n  \n \nTuition: \nThis is priced as a regular class.  Register with your class pass or membership. Or pay $18 drop in. \n  \nRegistration: \nYou must pre-register at least 30 minutes before class. Between shows Deidra continued studying Yoga and began teaching in 2011. \nAfter taking her first Iyengar class\, Deidra was amazed at how much she learned in just one class. “I needed a foundation for my practice and teaching\, I found it in Iyengar Yoga. As well as teaching all over the US\, Janet has taught in Mexico\, Cuba\, Brazil\, Morocco\, Italy\, Germany\, Spain\, Denmark\, Finland\, Japan and Scotland. Recently\, she taught at the Yoga Journal Conference in San Francisco. Before devoting herself to teaching exclusively\, Janet was the Program Director at IYISF. In 2001 she co-chaired the National Iyengar Yoga Conference in Pasadena for 850 students studying under Geeta S. Iyengar (BKS Iyengar’s daughter). Her style of teaching is faithful to the ancient tradition of yoga\, but is infused with love and light. \nJanet believes in sharing the joy that she has found in yoga with all who come in contact with her. This along with the technical skills she has accumulated over many years of personal practice\, study and teaching make her a much sought after teacher wherever she goes.  Find out more about Janet at her website: http://www.jmacleodyoga.com/\n \nABOUT THE YOGA BLESSINGS FUND:\nAdeline Yoga is committed to supporting diversity in our yoga community and social justice. Financial need is defined as the inability to pay the full tuition fee for the program\, based on an individual’s total financial situation (This should include assets and cash flow).\nCurrently enrolled students of Adeline Yoga.\nUnder-represented populations at the studio/Iyengar yoga.\n\n  \nThe Yoga Blessings program is funded in three ways: \n\nIncome from overall studio sales.\nCurrent students donate classes and money.\nFundraising events such as this.\n\nFor more details\, email info@adelineyoga.com

SUMMARY:Joy Practice
DESCRIPTION:Joy Practice\n3-4:30 pm\nTODAY! March 21\nMudita is the Sanskrit word that means joy and is defined as the pleasure that comes from delighting in other’s well-being. Joy is one of the four immeasurable in Buddhism and is included in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as one of the qualities of mind which leads to citta prasadanam\, “a graceful diffusion of consciousness”. Joy is our birthright as humans. It is not something that we really need to practice or create; in fact\, it is our natural state or drastuh svarupe (YS.1.3). \nThat is easy to say and do when things are going well\, but what about when we are going through difficult times? If we can continue to remember our true nature\, and to experience joy and pleasure through adversity\, then we gain resilience and confidence that any situation in life is workable. It is also a great way to feel empowered and expansive when everything else feels likes its contracting. \nJoin Cynthia for an exploration of joy through embodied movement\, meditation and connection. \nThis class is held live online via zoom.  You must register at least 30 min early to ensure you get your unique Zoom link. \nTuition: Use your membership or class pass.  New to Adeline?  Drop-in is $18 or you can buy a week of unlimited classes. \n  \n\n\n \n  \nYou must pre-register for the class at least 30 min before it starts. Fifteen minutes prior to class you will receive a unique zoom log-in and specific instructions. \nFirst time on Zoom with us? Check out our tip sheet! Our tips will help you get ready for your first class with us. \nYou can find out more about our Live Online Programming here \n  \n\nAbout the Instructor:\n \nCynthia Bates is a seasoned yoga and meditation teacher who has committed her life to uncovering the dharma or truth\, knowing full well that truth is a moving target. For Cynthia\, the root of spiritual practice lies in penetrating the veils of unknowing and becoming more and more comfortable with that state. The unknowing\, intuitive or mystical state in which one experience the inter-connectivity and interdependence of life itself\, is at the core of all spiritual practices. From that state\, everything becomes workable and every experience becomes another opportunity to hone the wheel of dharma. She is known for her infectious laugh\, intuition\, and dark humor. \nCynthia began her yoga practice in the Mysore tradition and spent 18 years studying in the Iyengar lineage which included several trips to India to study directly with the Iyengar family. The bulk of her training as a yoga teacher comes from eight years of mentoring with Manouso Manos. She is also a dedicated student of Vajrayana Buddhism studying with Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Choknyi Nyima Rinpoche. In 2019 Cynthia move to Big Island of Hawaii where she has found a nourishing home. She continues to dedicate her life to spiritual practice with the understanding that there is no real separation between spiritual practice and life. \n
